2026 World Breastfeeding Week

1st–7th August 2026

The Nigerian Society of Neonatal Medicine (NISONM) joins the global community in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week 2026, under the theme:

“Breastfeeding for a sustainable start in life: Strengthen what works.”

World Breastfeeding Week is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding, strengthen support for mothers and families, and promote practices that give every baby the best possible start in life.

Breastfeeding provides essential nutrition and protection for newborns and infants while supporting healthy growth and development. For mothers, families, healthcare professionals and communities, creating an enabling environment for breastfeeding is a shared responsibility.

This year, NISONM calls on healthcare professionals, policymakers, families, communities and other stakeholders to inform, anchor, engage and galvanize action that strengthens proven breastfeeding practices and support systems.

Let us work together to strengthen what works and ensure that every newborn and infant has the opportunity for a healthy and sustainable start in life.
